Let Your Voice Be Heard

IMG_9121.JPG

This week has been full of life, both incredibly joyful and filled with frustration and sadness. I stopped watching the news months ago because every day it filled me with anxiety to watch this country take hundreds of steps backwards towards inequality instead of compassion, towards cold-hearted xenophobia instead of inclusion.  Though there have been many times in my life where my cultural background, gender, and beliefs have left me feeling othered, this week I recognized the incredible place of privilege I hold.  I am in a position where my basic rights and my security remain intact. My day-to-day existence is generally joyful, peaceful, and unchallenged by the government. I exist inside a community that makes me feel seen and heard.

The same is not true for so many other human beings around the globe.

Because I am in a position of privilege, I often take for granted the simple and powerful gifts of my life.  This is one of the biggest reasons why I write in my gratitude journal every day.  It opened my eyes to the magic of even the smallest, most mundane moments. This week though reminded me how lucky I am to have a voice. With this gift comes an incredible responsibility: to use it wisely.  Do I have the courage to speak out against the injustice I see happening around me?  Do I have the wisdom to speak up in a non-combative but rather compassionate way? Do I have the integrity to act compassionately towards those who are in the most need, towards those whose voices are drowned out by the roar of prejudice?

My challenge for all of us: use the privilege, power, and position that we have, use our voices, to elevate instead of destroy.

Today's sequence is meant to stimulate your deep-seated truth so that you can speak with wisdom and compassion. Whether or not you agree with my politics, the idea here is that you find out what matters to you.  You discover what you are willing to stand up and fight for.  You realize how you want to use your voice.

And then, you do it.
